Alabama's Electric Chair
1927 - 1965
153 Executions
A convict, Ed Mason, built the electric chair, "Yellow Mama" for Kilby Prison’s death row.
Alabama's
electric chair received it's yellow paint upon completion thanks to a donation
from the Alabama Highway Department, which had a testing facility adjacent to
Kilby Prison in Montgomery.
Note: The 153 electrocutions mentioned above are Pre- Furman executions only.
Steven D. Stewart, The Clark County, Indiana Prosecuting Attorney, has an excellent website "1.000+ Death Penalty Links". Information on Post- Furman executions (including the names of victims) can be found in the section entitled "U.S. Executions Since 1976".
