The Croton Aqueduct Trailway rests atop the now dry old Croton Aqueduct, which once carried
water from the Croton Resevoir system down to New York City. It runs from the Bronx all the way up to
the New Croton Dam.
The Aqueduct Trailway is sheltered by trees and overlooks the Croton River. The trail is flat and not
too difficult. You can tell how far you walked by counting the ventilation shafts, which are spaced one mile apart.
On the weekends, you often see families with strollers introducing their children
to nature's wonders. At dusk, you can see families of deer.
Once a year,
there is a guided tour of the Ossining Weir Chamber.
Visitors can descend into huge brick tunnel that is the aqueduct and view
the nearby "Double Arches". For more information, pay a visit to the Ossining
Community Center, which houses a museum of the aqueduct (as well as an electric chair
from Sing Sing and other items of local interest).
