Tuckahoe
Goochland County, Virginia

This important home on the James River was built shortly after 1712 and enlarged to its present form around 1730.  It survives with the exterior (including old weather- boarding and sashes) and interior primary rooms entirely original.  It was built by Thomas Randolph (1689-1730), son of William of Turkey Island, and left to his son William and wife Maria Judith Page.  Tuckahoe was the childhood home of Thomas Jefferson, who lived there with his parents during the minority of William and Maria's son, Thomas Mann Randolph.  Nearby is the schoolhouse where Thomas Jefferson received his early education.  The house was sold by the Randolph's in 1830.  In 1992 Bohl Architects designed new kitchen and family quarters to provide contemporary accommodations for the current owners.
