Forth rode the king, fear behind him,
fate before him. Fealty kept he;
oaths he had taken, all fulfilled them.
Forth rode Theoden.

Everyone is riding to the great battle of our time, in which many things shall pass away. Say no more to any man, but come! to the Reading Room as we discuss Chapter 3 of Book V of The Lord of the Rings: "The Muster of Rohan"

Chapter 4 crawled on. Its purple prose no pause would sustain; and though now and again some great rolling period would go mad and lay waste to a paragraph, yet an ominous phrase arose after, took its place, and hurled forward.
     Chapter 4 crawled on. The adverbs rolled wildly. Over hills of antiquated syntax a hideous climax appeared: an eucatastrophe, cloaked, hidden, obscured yet from the reader.
     Join us amidst the wreck of centuries of modern literature in the Reading Room, as we withstand Chapter 4 of The Return of the King, Book V: "The Siege of Gondor."
