Forth rode the king, fear behind him,
fate before him. Fealty kept he;
oaths he had taken, all fulfilled them.
Forth rode Theoden.

Chapter 4 crawled on. Its purple prose no pause would sustain; and though now and again some great rolling period would go mad and lay waste to a paragraph, yet an ominous phrase arose after, took its place, and hurled forward.
     Chapter 4 crawled on. The adverbs rolled wildly. Over hills of antiquated syntax a hideous climax appeared: an eucatastrophe, cloaked, hidden, obscured yet from the reader.
     Join us amidst the wreck of centuries of modern literature in the Reading Room, as we withstand Chapter 5 of The Return of the King, Book V: "The Siege of Gondor."
