SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS OF THE S.F.A.B.C. - Topic Discussion Group
The Topic Discussion Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, 8:00
PM, at Borders Books ∓ Music, 81 Wayne Towne Center Mall (next to
the Willowbrook Mall), Wayne, New Jersey (973) 785 - 0037.
(This group previously was meeting at Borders in Paramus, New Jersey, but moved
to Wayne in July 1998. The date has changed from the third Tuesday to the
fourth Tuesday of the month.)
The group started as a book discussion group in June of 1994 and for a while was
our most successful bookstore group. Over the last half of 1995, a number of key
people moved away, took night classes, lost interest or became entangled in other
matters. In an effort to broaden our base, we changed the focus of the group to a
topic format.
We still recommend reading a specific book each month, but use that title
as a starting point for a more general topic. This allows people who did
not have a chance to read the recommended book to still take part in the
discussion. In April of 1996, for example, The Time Machine by H G Wells
springboarded a discussion of "Time Travel" that included both
the book & movie versions, the Time Patrol series by Poul Anderson,
the ChangeWars stories by Fritz Leiber, episodes of Star Trek,
the Back to the Future movies, stories by Asimov, Bradbury, and many
others.
Carol Smith is the Moderator of the group. Ms. Smith is a member of the New Jersey
Science Fiction Society and a past president and newsletter editor of that group.
