Science Fiction Association of Bergen County

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS OF THE S.F.A.B.C. - Computer Users Group
***** This Group No Longer
Exists *****
This group seemed like a good idea at the time.
There has traditionally been a significant overlap between science
fiction fans and people interested in computers. We hoped to make
contact with science fiction fans who had not discovered the
Association through its other activities.
The group met at the Barnes & Noble, 765 Route 17 South, Paramus,
New Jersey (201) 445 - 5950 on the first Monday of each
month at 8:00 PM.
Three problems developed with this group.
The first is a general problem with speaker-driven events. They
require a lot of work and they become less of a draw over time.
The second was that a number of speakers committed, but then backed out
at the last minute. This was a particular problem with speakers
the store booked as opposed to speakers booked by the Association.
The third was the crusher, though. Our questionnaires determined
that there was less of a correlation between an interest in
computers and science fiction than one would find in a random gathering
people walking down the street.
And so we folded our tents.
We did not go home however. We had developed a relationship with
the store through this event. When a store-created science
fiction book discussion group needed help, they turned to the
Association. Details about this can be found in another Special
Interest Group -- The Classics of Science
Fiction Group.
