SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS OF THE S.F.A.B.C. - Anime Associates

Anime is the term for animated stories which originate in Japan. Japanese animation springs out of a different tradition than that in the United States. Although there are a number of cultural differences between the two countries, the single most important is that in Japan animation is looked upon as a perfectly legitimate vehicle to tell stories to adults, while in the U. S., it is pretty much relegated to the entertainment of the young.

Our Anime Associates group was launched in September of 1995. It meets on the second Saturday of each month (except during the summer) from 6:00 - 8:00 PM in the same building as the Association. Normally, this means the basement of the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

Our philosophy has been a "something old, something new" approach. We pretty much stick to titles which have been subtitled or dubbed, but every now and then may stick in something hot which is still in Japanese.

Turnout for this group has not been as strong as we had hoped and we are considering ideas for boosting attendance. It is not necessary to be a member of the Association to attend gatherings of the Anime Associates.

Patricia Malone, a former director of the New York Chapter of the Cartoon Fantasy Organization and its successor, the Animation Fantasy Association, was the original moderator of the group. Other committments have made it impossible for her to continue in this position. The Association deeply appreciates her assistance.

Members of the group take turns in supplying videos for this activity.
