We invite you to join us in ushering in a new year of science fiction and fantasy. The January 12, 2002 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County will be held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church, 314 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, Bergen County, New Jersey (201) 327 - 3960. You can find directions to the Church below.
This will be the first meeting of our revived Bergen County Star Trek discussion group, The Final Frontier. Early birds will still be able to watch the 6:00 PM television broadcast of Andromeda, but Star Trek and other media events will be discussed from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Roy Greenberg will lead a discussion of the pre history of the Federation. He recommends reading the Trek novels Strangers from the Sky by Margaret Wander Bonnano and Federation by Garfield and Judith Reeves-Stevens.
Our Anime Associates group will show episodes of Ranma 1/2 and other comedies beginning at 6:15 PM.
At 8:00 PM, we will screen the video, Creepy Tales. The video consists of two tales of terror. Michael Russin and Neil Hagelgans, the principals of Cinemasky Productions, will be on hand to give insights into the shooting of the flick and answer questions. The duo has previously done MTV videos. Their website is http://www.cinemasky.com.
The S F A B C meets on the second Saturday of the month and features talks, slide shows, and other presentations by people in the science fiction, fantasy, horror and related fields. The Association sponsors a Star Trek group, six book-related discussion groups (one focusing on a movie or television tie-in, one on a horror monster book, one on a topic, one on a science fiction classic, one on a science topic, and one on the entire body of work by a specific author), an art group, a movie group, a group devoted to anime, a group that watches SF television, a writer's critique group for aspiring authors, a fantasy role-playing game, a special activities group, and other events. We also produce this newsletter and invite you to visit our website at:
The Methodist Church is across the street from our normal meeting site, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center. Additional parking can be found on the sides and back of the Church.
Important Note: The Methodist Church is on WEST Saddle River Road. One block further over is EAST Saddle River Road. Unlike streets in New York, East does not turn into West. The roads are on opposite banks of the Saddle River which is nothing more than a stream at this point.
Exit ROUTE 17 NORTH at the sign which reads SADDLE RIVER / WOODCLIFF LAKE. (This is the exit after Sheridan Avenue, Ho Ho Kus.) This exit puts you onto EAST ALLENDALE AVENUE heading East. Stay on road for about 1/2 mile and turn left at the first traffic light onto WEST SADDLE RIVER ROAD. Drive north for 1-3/4 miles. Shortly after passing a brick Catholic Church, the Church of the Presentation, on your left hand side you cross into Upper Saddle River. The Methodist Church is on your right hand side. If you come to a traffic light you have slightly overshot and hit LAKE STREET.
Note: You will see a sign marked WEST SADDLE RIVER ROAD on Route 17 northbound well to the south of where you have been told to leave 17. If you take this exit, you will eventually get where you want to be, but it will take you a lot longer to get there.
Exit ROUTE 17 SOUTH at SADDLE RIVER / WOODCLIFF LAKE exit. This puts you onto EAST ALLENDALE ROAD heading East. You drive under the highway. Then follow the directions from Route 17 Northbound.
Note: This way takes you a little bit longer than the exit for UPPER SADDLE RIVER, but it spares you making hairpin turns on steep hills at night in bad weather on an unfamiliar road.
Take Exit 172, GRAND AVENUE, MONTVALE. (This is the last exit in New Jersey and is just past the Montvale Service Area). Turn left at the exit ramp and head west on GRAND AVENUE. There are a lot of small towns in this area, and the road that you're on will keep changing its name. At different points it is called GRAND AVENUE, MONTVALE ROAD, RAMSEY ROAD and LAKE STREET. At the second traffic light you will be at the intersection of LAKE STREET and EAST SADDLE RIVER ROAD. It has two landmarks that anyone in the area will know about: a 7-11 type store called Elmers and a Texaco station. Keep driving west. Do not turn. Turn left at the next traffic light onto WEST SADDLE RIVER ROAD. The Methodist Church is 1/10 of a mile down the road on your left.
Follow ROUTE 59 until you come to Norris Pontiac in Monsey and turn at the traffic light unto ROUTE 306. This road is also called EAST SADDLE RIVER ROAD. Head south towards New Jersey. (Note: Although the maps show this road as Route 306, and that's what everyone calls it, after you make the turn, the sign reads ROUTE 73. Don't ask me to explain it.) Stay on ROUTE 306 for 2.3 miles Note that there is a long stretch between the first and second traffic lights.
Turn right at the second traffic light which is the intersection of EAST SADDLE RIVER ROAD and LAKE STREET. A Texaco station and Elmers are at this corner. Proceed west and turn left at the next traffic light onto WEST SADDLE RIVER ROAD. The Methodist Church is 1/10 of a mile down the road on your left.

The S F A B C Annual Holiday Party & Pot Luck Dinner was held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 10, 2001. The temperature had been in the 60s the day before the meeting and the area was in the middle of a three month drought. Naturally, it snowed.
The weather may have kept some people away, but those who persevered discovered one of the best balanced food spreads we have ever offered. Unlike some past years, we had more than enough of every food category: main dishes, sides, drinks, desserts, paper products.
Among the main dishes were London Broil by Pamela Webber, chicken cutlets by Sharon Archer, meatballs by Charles Garofalo, and tarragon chicken by Nancy Denker. Sides included ziti by Brett Wallace and pasta by Robert Yeager. Desserts included bakery cookies from William Molendyk, toll house cookies by Kathy Holusha, truffles by Dan Adler, and cinnamon buns by John Upton. Joan Hardy brought an ice cream cake. Asta Sinusas added fruit. Hillary Sherwood brought paper goods. Roy Greenberg contributed lox. Bruce Wallace provided shrimp. This is only a smattering of what was on hand.
Those who wanted more entertainment than conversing and eating were able to watch cartoons in the Wesley Room. At 9:00 PM, we showed Witch Hunt, a sequel to the fantasy, Cast a Deadly Spell.
Our thanks to everyone who helped with the set up and clean up, the food and the good cheer.
Last year's annual report identified the Association's highest priority as the recruitment of new members. We were well rewarded for devoting additional time and energy on recruitment. Eighteen people joined the S F A B C during the 2001 calendar year. They made the difference between an organization struggling to get by and one doing reasonably well.
The irony is that this happened during a year when programming, the group's traditional strength, was--to be polite--a bit spotty. We were always scrambling to replace guest speakers who had fallen through at the last minute. This resulted in scheduling more authors and videos than originally planned. Our thanks to Dale Kagan and Robert Katz, among others, for saving the day on very short notice.
Meeting attendance was up from the past three years,
though below our glory years of 1995 - 1997. A list of our Year
2001 speakers appears below, along with the Attendance Totals of
the past five years. Note that figures are for officially
attending adults, it does not include children, people who left
before the meeting was formally called to order or arrived after
the meeting had officially concluded. The total includes the
speaker and any guest (s)he brought.

Since Dr Richard Katz, our November guest speaker, is an anesthesiologist, he maintains a different writing schedule than most writers. He writes only on weekends, for 3 - 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday before his family wakes up. Getting up weekends at the crack of dawn actually allows him to sleep later than his normal work schedule.
The funniest anecdote dealt with a pep talk by his agent on the need to add a sex scene to his first mystery novel. Although she has represented him for ten years, they have never met face to face. She speaks like a very proper matron, and the author had us howling over this conversation: "Dr Katz, you have to write a sex scene. I know you can do it. Brace yourself. Put them in the sack."
The author revealed that he loves a good swashbuckler. This led to a back and forth digression on Sabatini, Captain Blood, The Black Swann, The Princess Bride and other tales of derring-do.
He really enjoys being a science fiction writer and going to conventions. He sees Hal Clement at every convention. Hal Clement: "My ego is just as big as Isaac Asimov's." Pamela Webber (from our audience): "But he's dead now." Kate Landis (also from our audience): "But his ego lives on."
This was a fun meeting with a good guest.
