We had a change of pace from our usual sort of program at the October 10, 1998 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County.
Instead of going outside the Association for a talk by a guest, we invited three members to share their expertise and enthusiasms with the group.
The evening began with a short talk on astronomical phenomena of note by Paul Dellechiaie. Mr Dellechiaie is a member of the Westchester County Astronomical Society (as well as the President of the New Jersey Science Fiction Society). Paul gave a talk and answered questions about a variety of upcoming
solar, lunar and cometary events. Unfortunately, the overcast skies prevented him from setting up his telescope to point out some interesting sights.
A chance question from the audience elicited the surprise treat of the evening: a story about Paul's encounter with a U.F.O. He was driving home one night when he witnessed a strange formation of lights dancing and moving silently across the sky. I will not attempt to recapture the eerie build-up Paul gave, but in the end, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation. (All right, I'll stop teasing you. They were a group of ultralights.)
John Upton then gave a slide show of costumes displayed at Worldcons over the past decade. Mr Upton has been the official con photographer at several conventions, as well as the treasurer of the New York Science Fiction Society, the Lunarians, and the chairman of Lunacon '97. He gave a brisk, clean, informative presentation that could be used as a model for how to give a slide show presentation.
We took a break before concluding with the final portion of the program in which Bill Wagner talked about one of his favorite authors--Edgar Rice Burroughs. He concentrated on the first books of the Tarzan and John Carter series, moving back and forth between the books and the life of the author.
Thinner by Stephen King was the featured title of the Monsters Book Group which met at Barnes & Noble in Nanuet, New York on Thursday, October 1, 1998. Club members Paul Dellechiaie, Philip De Parto, David Douglas, Robert Le Bow, Barry Weinberger and Pamela Webber were joined by regulars Brendan Brosnan, Ann-Marie Brown, Kathleen Brown-Romeo and Todd Walter. Paul, Phil and Pam walked over to the Nanuet Diner for coffee afterwards.
The Media Tie-In Book Group met at Borders in Livingston, New Jersey on Friday, October 2, 1998. Kathy Holusha led a discussion of Stephen King's The Shining which included S F A B Cers Vincent Carlucci, Michael Doolittle, and Steve Rubin, as well as Derek Epstein and newcomers Larry and Nathan Huss.
Professor James Keogh spoke about computer viruses on Monday, October 5, 1998 at the meeting of the Computer Users Group at Barnes & Noble in Paramus, New Jersey. Club members Philip De Parto, David Douglas, Bruce Wallace, Pamela Webber and August Yang were joined by regulars Roy Hoffmann, Murray Pelta, George Petras, Jules Sackman, and Robert Shine, as well as newcomers Alfred Cohen and Joseph Cole.
On Tuesday, October 6, 1998 the Classics of Science Fiction Group met at Barnes & Noble in Paramus, New Jersey to discuss Gateway by Fredrick Pohl. S F A B Cers present were Philip De Parto, Michael Piazza, Robert Savoye, Carol Smith, Jim Spinosa, Steve Spinosa, Melinda Taylor, Pamela Webber and Taras Wolansky. Everyone but Carol and Mindy made it to the Suburban Diner for a raucous post event, with "Victory at Sea" being one of the highlights. You had to be there.
Monsters and other horrors encountered in Star Trek were discussed at the Final Frontier's meeting at Barnes & Noble in Livingston, New Jersey on Friday, October 9, 1998. Club members Vincent Carlucci, Philip De Parto, Michael Doolittle, Jean Heslin, Kathy Holusha, Debra Matofsky, Steve Rubin, Jim Spinosa, Steve Spinosa, and Pamela Webber were joined by regulars Derek Epstein, Michael Feldman, Larry Huss and Nathan Huss. Everyone but Vince, Kathy and Jean went for coffee plus at the Ritz Diner later.
The AD&D/Runequest Game was run by William Molendyk at the Game Master in Fair Lawn, New Jersey on Saturday, October 10, 1998. Philip De Parto,Charles Garofalo and Sharon Roberg of the Association were joined by regular Jim Duffy. The group made peaceful contact with the nomadic Haanebencaanish Tribe (after a non-fatal encounter with a coup counting warrior), were made temporary resident guests, and spent about a week settling in to learn the tribe's language, customs, etc. The routine was broken up when a large party of mounted warriors from a city rode into the largely empty camping site and began looting. The tribesmen and the party fled or hid as best they could.
The Art of the Fantastic Group met to discuss Fantasy Architecture at Barnes & Noble in West Paterson, New Jersey on Monday, October 12, 1998. Club members Philip De Parto, Charles Garofalo, Michael Piazza, Robert Savoye and Pamela Webber were joined by regular Michael Pesoli and newcomer Dusan Peric. Phil, Bob, Pam, and Mike Piazza went to the Park West Diner afterwards.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon was the featured flick shown at That's Science Fiction! at Borders in Paramus, New Jersey on Wednesday, October 14, 1998. The film and post-event discussion group at the Suburban Diner con-sisted of S F A B Cers Chris Hasselkus, Steve Herr, Michael Piazza, Robert Savoye, and Barry Weinberger.
The first meeting of the Science and Science Fiction Group was held on Thursday, October 15, 1998. Club members Paul Dellechiaie, Philip De Parto, David Douglas, Eyal Mozes and Pamela Webber were joined by newcomer Leigh Ann Oakley at Barnes & Noble in West Nyack, New York. Paul moderated a discussion of Bug Park by James Hogan, the physics of miniaturization, and some interesting science news tidbits. Everyone but Leigh went to the New City Diner afterwards.
L Sprague de Camp was the featured writer at the Author Discussion Group that met at Borders in Paramus, New Jersey on Tuesday, October 20, 1998. The talk centered on four aspects of de Camp's writing: his time travel/alt-ernate history works like Lest Darkness Fall, his writings for Unknown, especially the Harold Shea tales (done with Fletcher Pratt), his efforts in popularizing heroic fantasy in the '60s both as an author and an editor, and his non-fiction pieces. Other club members present were Philip De Parto, Eyal Mozes, Michael Piazza, Robert Savoye, Pamela Webber and Taras Wolansky. Everyone but Ernest went to the Suburban Diner afterwards.
Jackie and Mark Hecht hosted the monthly Special Activity, a Halloween Party, at their home in Boonton, New Jersey, on Saturday, October 24. 1998. There was a rather small turnout for this one, with club members Sharon Archer, Karen Boyle, Nancy Denker, Philip De Parto, James La Barre, Patricia Nash (with Elizabeth and Mary in tow), Michael Piazza, John Radli, Greg Rosewall, Robert Savoye, Bruce Wallace, and Pamela Webber. There were also a lot of the Hecht's family and friends there as well. Bruce Wallace won the coveted "Weenie King" crown for having the most Halloween spirit.
The Writers' Critique Group met at Borders in Wayne, New Jersey on Sunday, October 25, 1998. Philip De Parto, Charles Garofalo, Michael Piazza, Robert Savoye, Lucy Schmeidler and Pamela Webber were in attendance. Bob read "Man-Eating Pizzas from Planet X," Mike read Chuck's "Castanets," and Phil read a section of Mike's Canyon of Angst.
Philip De Parto, Charles Garofalo, Steve Rubin, and Lucy Schmeidler comprised a disappointingly small turnout for the discussion of Science Fiction Detectives at the Topic Discussion Group's gathering a Borders in Wayne, New Jersey on Tuesday, October 27, 1998. Isaac Asimov's Robot stories, Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man and the movie Bladerunner were a few of the treatments discussed.
We have run into brick walls in our efforts to place S F A B C discussion groups at three Barnes & Noble superstores in this area. The B & N stores in Edgewater, in Hoboken, and in Paramus, New Jersey (on 17 North) do not want to host science fiction, fantasy or horror-related groups. This means that we will not be able to put in place the Science and Science Fiction Writing group we had touted a couple of months ago, as well as a couple of other ideas we had been kicking around.
We'll focus our energies in other directions and bide our time. It took years for conditions to change and allow us access to the other Paramus store and to West Paterson. We can afford to wait and take the long view.
