Sweet Dreams

2004-5

According to Buddhist thought, just as clouds are not solid, our waking state is an illusion, no more real than our dreams. Neither is solid, but rather an endlessly moving and changing microcosm of the universe.

A fabric sample book, found on the street, inspired this series about dream states. The material reminded me of bed linens and I started making faux pillowcases as the ground for the paintings. Okay so I was a little sleep deprived, but the imagery did make me think of dreaming with the mind manufacturing forms from the fertile ground of the subconscious.

Image streams, in oils, collage and raised or incised wax, encompass the subterranean to the celestial, and include the dead, demons, deities, even Mickey D (late night cravings for french fries perhaps).
