As of mid-August we have the names of about 398 people who worked on Stretch.
We have located about 290. Their contact information is shown below. (In some cases we are able to show only the interim results of a search in progress.) Of the remainder 25 are listed as deceased and 99 are listed as missing.
The STAT line shows the intent to attend. A '1' says I will attend (if I can); a '3' says I may attend; a '5' says other events will intervene. Also to be shown later: the number of people attending (single or couple), the number of nights, and the hotel at which they will be staying.
The long sequences of "not here ... not here ... not here" are the results of the work in progress of the indefatigable Chris Larson.
Please make sure that the information in your entry is correct and up-to-date (especially the status of your plans to attend the reunion). Some inaccuracies may have crept in, given the many, many messages we have received. Thanks in advance.
There were several couples in which both people worked on Stretch. They did not fit easily into the original scheme. For example, which one should be listed as the worker and which as the spouse? Or how to indicate the separate parts of the organization into which they fit? My solution was to list each individual in a separate entry. No thought of domestic disturbance should be inferred.
Jim Willard recently sent me a bunch of names of IBM and NSA
people associated with Harvest. I was able to track down some of
them; several will be attending the reunion.
Jim also sent along a memorandum detailing the invitees to the
Harvest Tenth Anniversary party. Jim says that some of these
people were not actually workers on Harvest. If you can provide
details on any of the people noted as missing, I would appreciate
your letting me know. It is too late to extend an invitation to
the reunion, but I would like to continue to add to the list in
the coming months.

* My wife and I will not be able to attend the STRETCH/HARVEST reunion. I regret that we are
* stuck with numerous previous engagements that we just cannot postpone. I suspect that most
* of the attendees will be "hardware" types. NSA, including Sam Snyder's Harvest history,
* does not have a good collection of our Harvest software development history. I was involved
* with the development of our Harvest Operating System (HOPS). I believe this to be the first
* comprehensive operating system for a large computer. The hardware history can be verified
* by contract dates, costs, etc. Unfortunately, the software history has no such record. HOPS
* was done all in house. It included a command language, application programming rules, file
* storage and maintenance, general purpose data processing job capability (handling many tens
* of individual program operations as a discrete "job", e. g. payroll), a debug cycle where all
* parameters for all programs in all jobs could be validated by the operating system and the
* individual programs requested before time was spent running those programs. This avoided a
* job blowup on the seventy-first program step of a ninety step job. It also had five levels
* of restart for operations recovery in the event of a software or hardware hiccup during a
* "run" job cycle. I think it was the best general purpose computing facility of its day.

* I was sorry to see the note on Steve Dunwell's passing away. His work was key to IBM's later
* accomplishments. I guess you knew that Stretch ran four times faster than the memory cycle
* speed thanks to Steve.

* I was a graduate student at the University of Ill. in
* 1958 and was fortunate to be offered a summer job in the Harvest group. I
* later returned to IBM San Jose after a few years in the Aerospace Industry
* and, as mentioned in my bio, worked on the Cypress photo-store and later in
* ASDD lab in Los Gatos. I see many names in your roster that I knew during my
* IBM career. Leon Wun is a good friend and we meet for lunch quite often. The
* Los Gatos area is full of former IBM'rs and this brought back many fond
* memories.

* the Harvest group as it was in '58. Sadly a number have died in the interim.

* Hugh died in August 2000. We got married in 1980. He took early retirement in 1989 and we
* retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Hugh quickly got bored with retirement so he went
* to a local college and took every science and math course offered. Then when he ran out of
* courses, he set up Chesapeake Bay Internet Associates, a website development/hosting company.
