  Speaker: John R. Galanti (jgalanti@hvdata.net)
President and founding investor in Hudson Valley DataNet

Program: Broadband Communication and its Impact on the Economy

  About the Topic

DataNet, a company based in Newburgh, NY, was formed in 2000 to
provide high capacity broadband communications services to the
greater Hudson Valley region. With its all fiber-optic based
network, DataNet provides enterprise network solutions, managed
high-capacity Internet, and carrier/broadcast quality data
transport throughout the area. With its extensive
interconnections to national and international fiber optic
networks, DataNet is able to bring the Hudson Valley complete
global connectivity.

DataNet's network provides services to hundreds of commercial
buildings and campuses in the area, serving the majority of
healthcare, schools, colleges, government, and commercial
facilities throughout the region. DataNet counts as its
customers the largest employers in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster
counties.

By being able to provide custom data communications networks,
with 99.999% reliability (SLA), and fully redundant connectivity
to NYC, DataNet has begun to act as a catalyst in the region's
efforts to attract high-quality jobs to the area. As an example,
the region is now focusing on attracting datacenter operations
for NYC's financial services companies. These companies, with
their enormous computing capacity, must also have reliable,
redundant data communications capabilities, with commensurate
capacity. With the heightened awareness of the vulnerability of
these critical computing assets, companies are now searching for
safe, reliable, and redundant locations. DataNet is assisting the
region in its positioning to play such a role.

  About the Speaker

Mr. Galanti will provide an overview of Hudson Valley DataNet,
including its history, network capabilities, and product
offerings. He will focus the majority of his talk on the
economic development impacts that broadband communications and
technology is having on our community, and what that might hold
for the Hudson Valley's future.

Cost: Free and open to the public

  When: Monday, Jan 19, 2004, at 7:30 p.m.

  Where: Ulrich Room, Dyson Hall
Marist College, Route 9, Poughkeepsie, NY
              Directions

Dinner: 6 pm, Palace Diner, 194 Washington Street, POK, 845.473.1576

All are welcome to join us for dinner. (Go north on the Route 9
Arterial to the St. Francis Hospital exit, turn right, turn
right again. The Palace is one block further along on the right.)

Refreshments are served after the meeting. For further
information, email collier@nixspaam.acm.org or call 845.297.5901.

Information about the Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Association For Computing Machinery

O R G A N I Z A T I O N S

Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Association For Computing Machinery

Founded in 1947, ACM is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide. Today, its 75,000 members and the public turn to ACM for authoritative publications and pioneering conferences. See www.acm.org.

The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the ACM meets once a month from Sept thru May (except December) at Marist College (map).

The ACM Chapter seeks speakers. Topics should focus on technology with connections to computers (especially programming), to business, and/or to the Mid-Hudson Valley. Topics can range from the speculative to the practical, from the theoretical to the mundane.

If you have such a talk, or know someone who does, please contact me. The Chapter offers a friendly, informal, technically savvy audience. This meeting notice goes to over 350 technology oriented individuals and organizations in the Valley. A talk to the Chapter is a good way of making contact with this community.

Information for speakers.

Dues for membership in the Poughkeepsie Chapter are $10 per year.

Meetings are free and open to the public. Refreshments are served after the meetings.

Prior to the meeting some of the members get together with the speaker for dinner at a local restaurant. All are welcome to attend and to share in the cost of the speaker's dinner.

Watch the top of this web page for snow cancellations.

The Hudson Users Group (THUG)

19 Lower Bone Hollow Road
Accord, NY 12404

THUG is a Macintosh user group based in the Woodstock/Kingston/Rhinebeck area of New York State's Mid-Hudson Valley. Our more than 50 members range from newcomers to grizzled pros. Many THUGs are creative folks -- we have a lot of graphic artists and musicians among us -- while some members are fairly normal. We accept no dues.

Meetings are often on the first Wednesday of each month. The location varies. Usually there is a dinner before the meeting at a restaurant close to the meeting place.

If you would like to receive an email once a month with a summary of the current meetings, send me a note. Include your name and phone number so that when your ISP changes, I can try to locate you.

If you are already on the list and would like to be removed, reply to a note with 'remove' in the subject line or in the body of the note.

It is my goal to send only one email per month with a summary of local meetings. However, things change all the time, and so I expect this page to be updated frequently. Hence, to stay aware of what is happening, it may be advisable to check this page more often.

It may be possible to list the meetings of additional organizations on this page. Organizations should have some connection (technical or business) to computers and to the Mid-Hudson Valley.

If your organization would like to have a meeting listed on this page, please contact me with information about your organization well prior to the first meeting announcement to be listed. Only meetings open to the public will be listed. Date, time, place, speaker, and title are essential, of course, but this information also is critical:
