Isn't it Oct 11?
I wrote back, gnashing my teeth over the error and asked if she thought I should send out a correction. She replied:
I think it might be a good idea. The only reason I knew is because Iris sent me an invite. See you there.
From Rae Ann SEXTON Nowe on Sat 8/2/2008 4:34 PM
Any idea what the hotel room rates are? Is there anything planned for Sunday October 12? Last reunion some of us went over to Tom Colella's Sunday afternoon for some fellowship.
Need to know these things as we will be flying in from Florida and need to know if we should fly in Friday afternoon and fly out Sunday or Monday. This is important to us out of towners.
From Marilyn A. REED Lightner on Sat 8/2/2008 4:45 PM
Thank you for keeping in touch with so many of our classmates. I am delighted to still be on the list (actually I'm glad to still be breathing!). Sorry to report that Bill and I will be traveling through Greenland and Iceland during the 55th reunion. Take lots of photos and email them so I can see what I missed.
Thanks again and regards to all.

Hi Bill, and All,
I am so very sorry that I will not be able to get to "the Burgh" for this gathering. It sounds like it will be a wonderful event, and I hope I will be able to see some photos. I realize that I am running out of years, and will try to make the next one.
Please give everyone my warmest regards.

Thanks for the reunion info, I also received the flier about the reunion from Iris Layman. Marilyn and I had made previous plans to visit our son and family in Southern Maryland to celebrate a family birthday that weekend.
Keep me on the list for future events.

Thanks for the invitation to our class reunion. I regret to tell you that I will not be able to attend again this year as my wife and I have made plans for a trip out of the country. Greece to be exact. Hopefully I will be alive and healthy enough to attend the next one. Please give my very best to all our classmates. I think about them often even though I don't remember them all. Please give a special hello to Phil Troeschel as he is the one I communicated with during the previous reunion. Thanks again.

I too shall not make it this year. Hope those who do have a great time.
From James George ZORBAS on Tue 8/5/2008 3:22 PM
Hello again Bill,
I got your message that the reunion is on Oct 11th and replied to you, but I made an error in the message I asked you to give to Phil Kreuscher. My mistake was that I wrote his last name as Troeschel. I notice in this email that many of the respondants that will not be attending have asked you to forward pictures to them. I would like to be included in that list also. Email address is email@example.com. Thanks a million Bill.
With best wishes,
PS If you have any info on how I might be able to find a copy of the 1953 yearbook please let me know as mine was inadvertantly thrown out by a member of my family when my fathers estate was settled. Thanks again.

Yes, I have my reservations at the Sheraton...and will see you there hopefully !!! * Shortly, after I graduated from B.H.S., I got married and had 2 children, a boy and a girl. * When they became teenagers, their father had a heart-attack and passed away. I was 37 years old, * and knew I had to go out to work, and make the best of it. Since I always liked mathematics, * I went back to night school at Robert Morris, for like 10 years, and was able to achieve some * pretty decent jobs, as a bookkeeper/accountant. I did really well with Dravo, when they were * doing well. After that I managed to get jobs with small companies, as a bookkeeper in charge, * and was even able to maintain my own home, new cars, and make some investments for my future. * I remained single for 25 years. My children did really well.... My son owning a fairly large * "Lawn and Landscape Co.", and my daughter is a teacher at the Avonworth Elementary. I also have * 7 very nice grandchildren. I imagine that my fellow classmates will remember the funny * "German girl" that came to this country at 13, and couldn't speak English, at first not at all !! * My father, being a professor and scientist, was brought to this country the day the war ended, * to work here in the U.S.A. and 2 years later our family came here to live...After many years of * being single, I remarried. A German man, a engineer, who now is retired. We are living in * central Florida for the last 4 years, and enjoying the golden years.....God has surely blessed me * in many ways !!!! * * Elisabeth Graf Felgar Kellermann * *------------------ * * Hi, Elisabeth, * * What a wonderfully told story. Thanks so much for sharing it with all of us. * * I am curious about a lot of things. I will not put your answers on the web site unless you explicitly say to do so. * What did you father do? Was he at Peenemunde, the rocket center. Probably not. You would have moved to Alabama * instead and be speaking with a southern accent today. Do you speak German with your husband now? Were you an only child? * Have you been back to Germany? Do you have relatives there? * * Bill * *------------------ * * Hello Bill, happy to hear from you, and that you are so interested in my family ??? My father worked in Washington * and was a scientist with the rocket propellants...for 2 years, then, came to Pittsburgh, and worked at the Bureau of Mines, * one of the problems then, being the smog-problems......the american government brought my mother and 5 kids over, I was the oldest * and was 13....the youngest being 2 years old....Yes my husband and I are conversing in both languages, whatever fits the situation * better, if you know what I mean ???....and we have been back a few times....I just love to go and visit, also, have family over there * ....like my brother....I do like the life style over there, have you ever been over there ??? and also, ....my parents now, have both * passed on, and both of their ashes have been taken back to their home land.....in fact my mother only died 2 years ago, and her wish * was that her ashes be taken back, and put into the Danube, so she can float around in Vienna, which was our home.....so, my 3 sisters * and I decided to take a river cruise last year, from Amsterdam into Vienna, which by the way, was a wonderful thing to do....and left * our mother back in her "Heimat" anyway, hope this doesn't bore you to much, whatever you want to put on the web is up to you.... * I really don't mind ??? if you don't think our classmates will be too bored to read ???? Looking forward to our reunion..... * have you decided whether you are bringing your wife or your daughter ???.....my husband doesn't care to go, so, I'm coming myself, * and sharing a room with Peggy Uecker, and Sally Gipson, at the Sheraton..... Elisabeth * *------------------ * * Hi, Elisabeth, * * Thanks for filling in the details. I will put your full note on the web site. * * I am reminded of a story about Voltaire and his wife, who were both fluent in Italian, French, German, and English. * They spoke Italian when they were cooking, French when they were making love, German when they were discussing philosophy, * and English when they were fighting. I have told this story to a number of nonnative English speakers, and they all agree * that English is a very blunt, plain spoken language, perfect for arguing in. * * I have been on my good behavior for several weeks now, but, alas, it has been to no avail. My wife still declines to attend, * and so I will bring my daughter, who will probably be a lot of fun (unless I criticize her driving too much on the ride to Pgh.). * * Bill * *------------------ a1 William C. My husband also joined IBM * shortly after I did, but worked in different areas, and we both traveled. * * After 19 years in that career, life began to seem hectic as the old "extracurricular activities" were expanding * so I stopped working full time, ostensibly to consult. Since then I have worked on a lot of committees * for cultural institutions and clubs and think of the good old days when I was working and actually had more free time! * Ted is now retired and I have managed to fill up his time with organizations too. * * We enjoy traveling but often can't get away from our various commitments to do more. We do get to Mexico for a couple of weeks * every February -- always somewhere different, so in over 20 years we have really covered the country! We buy lots of crafts * and what was once the Mexican Room of our house has crept everywhere. * * I still have a bassoon but never play it -- the current standard poodle would freak out as weird noises leave her quivering. * * Hope everyone enjoys the reunion and reports on this web site. * a1 Gilbert L. Long notes from classmates. (Short notes are with a person's contact listing.)
Here are memories of high school and thoughts on life, on politics, or (worst of all) on how our kids are raising our grandkids.

Yunz are from Picksburgh if . . .
You walk carefully when it is "slippy" outside.
You often go down to the "crick".
You've told your children to "rid or red up" their rooms.
You can remember telling your little brother/sister to stop being so "nebby".
You've gotten hurt by falling into a "jaggerbush".
Your mother or grandmother has been seen wearing a "babushka" on her head.
You've "warshed" the clothes.
I ask you to hand me one of those "Gum-Bands" and you actually know what I'm talking about.
You know you can't drive too fast on the back roads... because of the deer.
You know Beaver Valley, Turtle Creek, Moon, Mars, Slippery Rock, Greentree and New Castle are names of towns.
A girl walks up to three of her girl friends and says, HEY YENZ GUYS"
You hear "you guyses", and don't think twice. (Example..."you guyses house is nice")
You know the three rivers by name and understand that The Point isn't just on a writing instrument.
You remember the bli
ard of 1994 and remember not being able to go outside because the snow was over your head and you would have suffocated.
You drink pop, eat hoagies, love pierogies and one of your favorite sandwiches actually has french fries ON it.
You know what a "still mill" is.
You expect temps in the winter to be record breaking cold and temps in the summer to be record breaking hot.
You know what Eat'N Park is and frequently ate breakfast there at 2:00 AM after the bar closed and made fun of people.
You didn't have a spring break in high school.
You spent your summers at Kennywood, SandCastle, or Idlewild.
You've been to the Braun's Bread Plant or Story Book Forest for a school field trip.
"Chipped ham" was always in your refrigerator when you were growing up.
You refuse to buy any condiments besides Heinz unless a Pittsburgh athlete's picture is the side of the container.
Your last name has 8 or more letters in it (and you either have a 'Z', 'U' or a 'ski' somewhere in there and nobody can pronounce it.)
Food at a wedding reception consists of rigatoni, stuffed cabbage, sour kraut and polska kielbasa.
Truth be told "Ders Dem Der Stillers" and all those other teams.
You'll send this on to family and friends who used to live in the Pittsburgh Area as well as to those who have never lived there, just so they can appreciate how different western PA really is!
"I wonder how many of Yunz guys actually understood all dat?"
==========================================================================From: Bill COLLIER
I read the following scene or saw it in a movie someplace, but cannot now remember where. Can anyone place it?
Person A, speaking to Person B: "Isn't Person C admirable? Made a fortune; then used it to found groups that have been the instrument of profound social change. Ran for office, got elected, and reformed the political process. Wrote paradigm shattering books. Aren't you impressed? I mean, how could anyone not be?"
Person B to Person A: "You forget, I went to high school with Person C."
As I began calling classmates for the reunion, I had this thought in mind: these are the people who knew me at my adolescent worst. You can imagine my relief then when numerous people asked, "Bill who?"
I joined the army in 1954 and married Roberta Starzynski, my backyard neighbor in Brentwood, in 1955 in the Panama Canal Zone. One evening I bumped into Jack Crumley, my eleventh grade chemistry class lab partner, on Avenida Central in the heart of Panama City. Fortunately, it was early in the evening so we were still sober enough to recognize each other.
There was an amateur theatrical group that my wife was active in. We partied with Pat Quinn, who later played Alice in the movie "Alice's Restaurant". And with John Aniston who has appeared in "Days of Our Lives" for the last 40 years and who also is the father of Jennifer Aniston. (Take that, Jack Ramsey !)
After the army I went back and finished college. In 1960 we came to Poughkeepsie and I wrote programs for IBM for 33 years. We had Jeff in 1963 and adopted Jennifer in 1971. We split, but remain on good terms.
In 1984 I married Yasuko DiGiusto (b. 1931 in Tokyo). As a psychiatric social worker she works all day with men who have been charged with murder, arson, rape, and/or jaywalking, but are too crazy to appear in court. The good thing about her work is that when she comes home to me at night, I appear fairly normal by comparison. She is the perfect companion on a trip to New York City. She knows all the museums and will tell stories about the artists whose paintings we see whom she met with her first husband (a sculptor) in Italy in the 1950's. She knows lots of cheap restaurants, and she will never take a bus or subway if the walk is less than two or three miles.
Nowadays I keep busy with my software company, volunteer work, and finding people for reunions (this is the third in the past year).
My family did not have a TV when I was in high school. I compensate now by watching the BBC news and Jim Lehrer on PBS, SpongeBob SquarePants on Nick, Andy Dick on MTV, and Larry David on HBO.
There are several things I regret.
In talking to classmates recently I discovered that there were a bunch of real, warm, feet-on-the-ground type of people in our class, and I regret that I never let myself know that before.
Mrs. Patrick, our guidance counselor, put herself out to help me choose Harvard over MIT. I feel I disappointed her. I wish she could at least have seen the computer architecture book I wrote.
I never thanked Bill Woods for teaching the most exhilarating class I ever took. I was fresh from the farm country of western Ohio, when Woods taught American literature from the standpoint of the prevailing philosophy of each of several different periods. (I remember Classical, Romantic, and Transcendental. There was a fourth; does anyone remember what it was?) Every six or eight weeks my understanding of the world changed totally as we moved from one period to the next.
One thing I found when calling classmates was that talking to particular people often triggered specific memories.
I had not spoken to Millie Wassel in 50 years. When I called, she immediately asked if I had thrown any shoes out of a window lately. Millie frequently took her shoes off during Mrs. Apple's English literature class. One day someone picked up one of her shoes and passed it up to the front of the row. When it got to me, I threw it out the window. As Millie limped out of the class, Mrs. Apple asked, "Millie, where is your shoe?" Millie said, "Bill Collier threw it out the window." I immediately began a week of detention with Mrs. Apple.
When I called Dodo Tear, we talked about Bill Woods' class, and she asked me if I remembered Woods throwing the two of us out of class (through the door, not the window). I remembered only vaguely. Dodo was not sure, but thought our sin had been to talk in class. Horrifying, no?
While Dodo was talking, I interrupted to ask, "Dodo, are you a turtle?" I was crushed when she didn't remember initiating me into the turtles. To avoid becoming a turtle, you had to answer three questions correctly. Failure to answer correctly meant that for forever after, when anyone asked, "Are you a turtle?", you had to reply, "You bet your sweet ass I am!" (We were in high school, remember?) I have forgotten the first question (and Dodo remembers nothing of this at all), but the second question was: What does a woman have two of that a cow has four of? Answer: legs, of course. The third question was: What does a man do standing up, and a woman does sitting down, and a dog does with one leg in the air? The answer is: shake hands. If anyone can recall the first question, please let me know so I can once again sleep through the night.
Addendum: I wrote the above a few weeks ago. Since then I have gradually realized that I got the facts about the shoe-out-the-window story all turned around. Dodo and I sat in the back of the room. It was Dodo who took off her shoes. I was the one who nudged it away from her, picked it up, and passed it up the row. Millie was the one who threw it out the window. I took the fall for Millie, and here she was, 50 years later, accusing me of being the culprit. And, most unbelievably, I thought her version was correct.
Impressions of Pittsburgh
I drove in on Route 51 from the south. So much had grown up.
The slag heap was still there, looking like a misplaced chunk
of the moon, but now with a new building on top. I turned onto
Streets Run Road, hoping to revisit the scene of teenage squib
fights. The area was surprisingly unchanged. I saw many curious
old buildings and not that many new ones. The road was congested
with escaping-from-the-city Friday afternoon traffic. I visited
Willets Road and then my former home at 3013 Pyramid Avenue. I
stepped out of the car to smell the air. There was not a hint of
mine smoke to be detected. I knew it was for the better, but I
was looking for nostalgia, and healthy air didn't do it for me.
I went down Maytide and miraculously I found the Liberty Tunnel
(wasn't it called the Liberty Tubes once upon a time?) and then
Station Square without a single wrong turn.
I wish we had had name tags Friday evening. It would have
saved some embarrassment. Someone pointed out that, in general,
the men were easier to recognize than the women. I put that down
to the women having once scaled a height of beauty at which they
could not remain forever, while the men, starting low and
ascending not at all, had little room in which to descend.
One exception was Rosemary Ray. I saw her across the room
early in the evening and did not recognize her. She looked so
young and pretty that I thought she must be someone's trophy
So much had changed at BHS. The one thing that seemed to most
connect us to the past was the auditorium. Details had changed,
but the whole was as we remembered it, and it was clearly the one
and only place where we once had all been together.
Stepping into the music room brought on a frisson of
remembrance. I had completely forgotten about this room.
On Saturday afternoon I walked over the Smithfield Street
bridge to see downtown Pittsburgh. It was smaller than I
remembered. I first looked for a used bookstore close to the
Monongahela where I had bought the books of Charles Fort; it had been
urban renewed into oblivion. Many of the old buildings in this
area had been lovingly restored, but they looked like museum
pieces, sterile and isolated, with little to make them look warm
There was one building that tickled me. It must have been an
ordinary old building with smallish, rectangular windows, but I
think originally there must have been an arc in the brickwork
surrounding each window. All the lines of the building had been
preserved, but the space within each arc had been replaced with
an arc-shaped window. A purist might have recoiled from the
adulteration of styles, but I liked it that two distinct ways of
being could inhabit the same space so pleasingly.
The PPG building was awful. It looked like the company's CEO
had deferred to his 13 year old video addicted son to choose the
However, the fountains in the PPG plaza were wonderful. It was
not just that they were fun to watch in an abstract sort of way;
it was fun to watch them in the company of other people,
especially the kids who darted in and out of the plumes,
ostensibly with the goal of keeping dry, but clearly with utter
delight at their failure.
I went to Kaufmann's just out of gratitude that this icon of
the past had been preserved. The gratitude did not extend to
actually purchasing anything.
I looked for Bronfman's jewelry store where my former father-
in-law had worked for almost all his life. It is now a sporting
goods store. Is nothing sacred?
All of the downtown feels sanitized. The blight is gone, but
with it the life. I could not find a Barnes and Noble or
Borders. The two Starbucks that I saw were tiny. Only one art
gallery. I sought idiosyncrasy, a museum of rolling pins,
perhaps, or a cemetary for salamanders, but there was nothing.
Part of me wished that on Saturday night there had been
background music from the early fifties, just to help bring back
the feeling of that time in our lives. The rest of me was
grateful for the silence; I really hated the popular music of
that day, and my hearing is presently so bad that any additional
interference would have completely eliminated any possibility of
There were so many familiar faces. I wanted to talk to everyone,
but what do you say to people whose faces are as well known as a
sibling's, and yet with whom you have never in your life had a
conversation? Surely it must be a common temptation to want to
start out with: "Hi. Tell me, how have you enjoyed playing a bit
part in the story of my life?" In ideal circumstances, say, a
warm afternoon on an open veranda overlooking a body of water
with a slow flow of malted beverages, I am sure I would have had
a life affirming conversation with each person there. As it was,
I had a few words with a lot of people (good) and a lot of words
with a few people (really good).
The Ducky Tour on Sunday was pure cornball, and I loved it. I
went "Quack, quack, quack" every time it was requested, and I
would do so again without shame or embarrassment. Did you know
that the dungeon scenes from "The Silence of the Lambs" were
filmed in the basement of the former Allegheny County Jail?
Neither did I until so informed by the tour guide of this and
other essential trivia.
On Sunday afternoon I went back to Brentwood for one last look
around. I drove down Pyramid Avenue again and then into the
woods in the ravine at the lower end of the street. I stopped
and debated a choice: (1) be sensible and leave immediately on
the nine hour drive back to Poughkeepsie, or (2) try to recapture
for a few moments the happy solitude I once found on foot further
down the trail. As I dithered, two girls about age 9 on bikes
came up the trail. They told me I shouldn't go into the hollow.
I asked why. They said that 102 people had been murdered down
there. I pointed out that they had just been down there. They
said that, yes, but it had been during the day. Sensing the
futility of pursing this line of conversation, I mentioned that I
had lived here 50 years ago. One asked where. I said 3013
Pyramid. Her eyes got very, very big and she said that was where
she lived now. Then she gulped and said that she had moved, that
she no longer lived there. Realizing that her parents had told
her never to tell a strange man where she lived, most particularly
when she was all alone with him in the woods, I quickly made the
sensible choice and headed home, but in an overwhelmingly
exhausted and hyper-caffeinated state with visions of the vice
squad awaiting me on my doorstep. Happily, they weren't.

One exception was Rosemary Ray. I saw her across the room early in the evening and did not recognize her. She looked so young and pretty that I thought she must be someone's trophy wife.
So much had changed at BHS. The one thing that seemed to most connect us to the past was the auditorium. Details had changed, but the whole was as we remembered it, and it was clearly the one and only place where we once had all been together.
Stepping into the music room brought on a frisson of remembrance. I had completely forgotten about this room.
On Saturday afternoon I walked over the Smithfield Street bridge to see downtown Pittsburgh. It was smaller than I remembered. I first looked for a used bookstore close to the Monongahela where I had bought the books of Charles Fort; it had been urban renewed into oblivion. Many of the old buildings in this area had been lovingly restored, but they looked like museum pieces, sterile and isolated, with little to make them look warm and alive.
There was one building that tickled me. It must have been an ordinary old building with smallish, rectangular windows, but I think originally there must have been an arc in the brickwork surrounding each window. All the lines of the building had been preserved, but the space within each arc had been replaced with an arc-shaped window. A purist might have recoiled from the adulteration of styles, but I liked it that two distinct ways of being could inhabit the same space so pleasingly.
The PPG building was awful. It looked like the company's CEO had deferred to his 13 year old video addicted son to choose the final design.
However, the fountains in the PPG plaza were wonderful. It was not just that they were fun to watch in an abstract sort of way; it was fun to watch them in the company of other people, especially the kids who darted in and out of the plumes, ostensibly with the goal of keeping dry, but clearly with utter delight at their failure.
I went to Kaufmann's just out of gratitude that this icon of the past had been preserved. The gratitude did not extend to actually purchasing anything.
I looked for Bronfman's jewelry store where my former father- in-law had worked for almost all his life. It is now a sporting goods store. Is nothing sacred?
All of the downtown feels sanitized. The blight is gone, but with it the life. I could not find a Barnes and Noble or Borders. The two Starbucks that I saw were tiny. Only one art gallery. I sought idiosyncrasy, a museum of rolling pins, perhaps, or a cemetary for salamanders, but there was nothing.
Part of me wished that on Saturday night there had been background music from the early fifties, just to help bring back the feeling of that time in our lives. The rest of me was grateful for the silence; I really hated the popular music of that day, and my hearing is presently so bad that any additional interference would have completely eliminated any possibility of conversation.
There were so many familiar faces. I wanted to talk to everyone, but what do you say to people whose faces are as well known as a sibling's, and yet with whom you have never in your life had a conversation? Surely it must be a common temptation to want to start out with: "Hi. Tell me, how have you enjoyed playing a bit part in the story of my life?" In ideal circumstances, say, a warm afternoon on an open veranda overlooking a body of water with a slow flow of malted beverages, I am sure I would have had a life affirming conversation with each person there. As it was, I had a few words with a lot of people (good) and a lot of words with a few people (really good).
The Ducky Tour on Sunday was pure cornball, and I loved it. I went "Quack, quack, quack" every time it was requested, and I would do so again without shame or embarrassment. Did you know that the dungeon scenes from "The Silence of the Lambs" were filmed in the basement of the former Allegheny County Jail? Neither did I until so informed by the tour guide of this and other essential trivia.
On Sunday afternoon I went back to Brentwood for one last look around. I drove down Pyramid Avenue again and then into the woods in the ravine at the lower end of the street. I stopped and debated a choice: (1) be sensible and leave immediately on the nine hour drive back to Poughkeepsie, or (2) try to recapture for a few moments the happy solitude I once found on foot further down the trail. As I dithered, two girls about age 9 on bikes came up the trail. They told me I shouldn't go into the hollow. I asked why. They said that 102 people had been murdered down there. I pointed out that they had just been down there. They said that, yes, but it had been during the day. Sensing the futility of pursing this line of conversation, I mentioned that I had lived here 50 years ago. One asked where. I said 3013 Pyramid. Her eyes got very, very big and she said that was where she lived now. Then she gulped and said that she had moved, that she no longer lived there. Realizing that her parents had told her never to tell a strange man where she lived, most particularly when she was all alone with him in the woods, I quickly made the sensible choice and headed home, but in an overwhelmingly exhausted and hyper-caffeinated state with visions of the vice squad awaiting me on my doorstep. Happily, they weren't.

It was nice talking with you and I just looked up the web site and found some interesting comments from classmates. In order to fill you in on my life briefly, first of all I hate the name Sarah and have always been called Sally, and my last name is spelled with a p "Gipson" thank you.
When my husband Don got out of the Marines (the one I was engaged to during our junior and senior year in school) we got married, then went off to Indianapolis, Indiana, while he went to college to become a Chiropractor. That's where I developed my love for race cars. We had six children: David 1955, Barbara 1957, Nancy 1958, John 1960, Susan 1965, Don 1969. The three oldest have blessed us with 10 grandchildren, 5 of each. No greats yet, but the oldest is to marry in June.
My husband Don, passed away 5 years ago and I have remained in my house where my youngest son Don still lives with me. I have children in various cities across the country and feel it my maternal obligation to visit them all. :) I love to travel so this works for me. I still work in the accounting field two days a week, which keeps me from becoming bored.
Take care, God Bless. Sally

I refuse to acknowledge that I graduated 50 years ago. Where did the years go? I don't feel like I got this old so why should I acknowledge that something like this happened 50 years ago? Lets cut it in half and then I will believe it.
At any rate thank you for taking the effort of trying to locate me. I know you are in a time warp and actually this is a 25 year old message.
Thanks for including your E Mail address. It makes everthing so much easier.
I know you don't like to hear it from us in the sunny South but don't freeze your tail feathers off. I know it has been a brutal winter in N Y and even though I don't know exactly where you are located it just sounds cold as well.
If you get a chance let me know a little about what you have been up to for the last 25 years.
Richard (Dick) Johnson
---------- A note from April 24:
You asked for additional information which I am happy to give you.
First of all I want to congratulate you on the fine job of giving information on your website of our fellow classmates. It is first rate and I have spent a good deal of time of reading all about my former classmates and what they have been up to for the last 50 years so from each and everyone of us "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES " and keep up the great job.
As for myself, I went to Korea shortly after graduating from Pitt and spent the next 18 months as a Lt near the DMZ. After returning home I spent the next 5 years in banking at PNB before moving to Pasadena, Calif. where I was a manager of a bank. Next stop was Florida where I have lived since 1968. During this time I was in business with a relative in the manufacturing of mobile homes. During this time we also developed two mobile home parks. Pinellas County where we lived became the county with the most mobile homes per square mile of any county in Florida so there were boom times. Later on I owned and operated Summit Moulding which became the largest distributor in Florida to the picture framing industry. A small and unknown niche in the business community. We designed wood frame moulding and had most of it produced in Taiwan, Japan and Italy so it was rather a neat business to be in. Eight years ago I sold the business and retired.
I have been married to Grace Pflugh for 35 years. We have one son who graduated from the University of Florida and is a V.P. of banking in the same city he graduated in, Gainesville, Fl. He has given us one grandson but we of course are hoping for at least one more grandchild. His wife was an assistant district attorney prior to taking a leave of absence to be a mommy.
We live 6 months of the year in Nokomis, Fl which is right next to Venice, Fl and 6 months in the N. C. Mountains where it is cool most of the summer in a little town called Land Harbor near Newland and in the shadows of Grandfather Mountain. I mention this because anybody familiar with the N. C. mountains will have heard of Grandfather Mountain.
Hope to read more messages on your web site as you publish them.
Thanks again for all of your efforts.

Check the link below.....This is really a sight to behold! The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas. You can scroll East-West and North-South by using the scroll buttons on the right and bottom of your screen. Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent". After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans- Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea! Note the density of Japan. What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing- built Space Station last November, on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric conditions.
NASA always has fabulous stuff!

Last week you asked about any interesting things that have happened in my lifetime. Well, except for a brush with a couple people who later became quite famous, I guess my life has been relatively ordinary.
When I was a student at Lehigh, I played golf with a guy who was in the fraternity right next to ours.........and his name is Roger Penske. If that doesn't ring a bell then check out the next Indianapolis 500 in May. His racing teams have been the most successful in Indy history. Also, he later capitalized on his achievements there and started Penske Rent-a -Truck which I'm sure you've seen on the highway more than once or twice.
Joy and I lived in Erie, Pa. for six years. When we moved to Cincinnati we sold our house to a young lawyer named Tom Ridge..........who's the former Gov. of Pa. and is now, of course, in charge of Homeland Security. Our former neighbors from Erie told us that Tom would work around the house a bit and then lie down and rest in the front yard for what seemed like hours.
Finally, speaking of Homeland security, I think I'm the only BHS '53 classmate with a Sept. 11th birthday!

THE CLASS REUNION
Every ten years, as summertime nears,
An announcement arrives in the mail,
A reunion is planned; it'll be really grand;
Make plans to attend without fail.
I'll never forget the first time we met;
We tried so hard to impress.
We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars.
And wore our most elegant dress.
It was quite an affair; the whole class was there.
It was held at a fancy hotel.
We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined.
And everyone thought it was swell.
The men all conversed about who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children became.
The homecoming queen, who once had been lean.
Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.
The jocks who were there had all lost their hair.
And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks.
No one had heard about the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon.
Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain.
She married a shipping tycoon.
The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed"
Was serving ten years in the pen.
While the one voted "least" now was a priest.
Just shows you can be wrong now and then.
They awarded a prize to one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least.
Another was given to the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.
They took a class picture, a curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties.
Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini.
You never saw so many thighs.
At our next get-together, no one cared whether
They impressed their classmates or not.
The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal.
By this time we'd all gone to pot.
It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores.
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw, and beans.
Then most of us lay around in the shade.
In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.
By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear.
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed.
And be home in time for their pill.
And now I can't wait; they've set the date.
Our fiftieth is coming, I'm told.
It should be a ball, they've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the old.
Repairs have been made on my hearing aid.
My pacemaker's been turned up on high.
My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled.
And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.
I'm feeling quite hearty, and I'm ready to party
I'm gonna dance 'til dawn's early light.
It'll be lots of fun; But I just hope that there's one
Other person who can make it that night.

Just a few of the many "FIRSTS" from OUR GREAT CITY of PITTSBURGH, that most people would find surprising....
Pittsburgh was the first city in the world to do a lot of neat things! Here are a few of the most well-known.
First Heart, Liver, Kidney Transplant - December 3, 1989 The first simultaneous heart, liver and kidney transplant was done at Presbyterian-University Hospital.
The First Internet Emoticon - 1980 The Smiley - was the first Internet emoticon, created in 1980 by Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Scott Fahlman.
First Robotics Institute - 1979 The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks.
First Mr. Yuk Sticker - 1971 Mr. Yuk was created at the Poison Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh after research indicated that the skull and crossbones previously used to identify poisons had little meaning to the children of today (for most children it means exciting things like pirates and adventure). Covering 27 counties and 33 percent of Pennsylvania's population, the Pittsburgh Poison Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is the largest such center in the United States.
First Night World Series Game - 1971 Game 4 of the 1971 World Series was the first night game in Series history. Pittsburgh tied the series in that game with a 4-3 win and went on to win the series, 4 games to 3. This was one of the last big moments in the career of well-loved Pirate, Roberto Clemente. Fourteen and a half months after the 1971 World Series, he died in a plane crash off the coast of his native Puerto Rico as he attempted to take food, clothing and medical supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
First Big Mac - 1967 Created by Jim Delligatti at his Uniontown McDonald's, the Big Mac debuted and was test marketed in three other Pittsburgh-area McDonald's restaurants in 1967. By 1968 it was a mainstay on McDonald's menus throughout the country and, eventually, the world.
First Pull-Tab on Cans - 1962 The pull-tab was developed by Alcoa and was first used by Iron City Brewery in 1962. For many years, pull-tabs were only used in this area.
First Retractable Dome - September 1961 Pittsburgh's Civic Arena boasts the world's first auditorium with a retractable roof (currently under consideration for demolition).
First U.S. Public Television Station - WQED - April 1, 1954 WQED, operated by the Metropolitan Pittsburgh Educational Station, was the first community-sponsored educational television station in America and was also the first to telecast classes to elementary schools (1955).
First Polio Vaccine - March 26, 1953 The polio vaccine was developed by Dr. Jonas E. Salk, a 38-year-old University of Pittsburgh researcher and professor, and his staff at the University of Pittsburgh.
First All-Aluminum Building - ALCOA - August 1953 The first aluminum-faced skyscraper was the Alcoa Building, a 30-story, 410 foot structure with thin stamped aluminum panels forming the exterior walls.
First Zippo Lighter - 1932 George G. Blaisdell invented the Zippo lighter in 1932 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. You can even find the name of the manufacturing location, either Bradford or Niagara Falls, Canada, stamped on the bottom of every Zippo lighter. The name Zippo was chosen by Blaisdell because he liked the sound of the word "zipper"- which was patented around the same time in nearby Meadville, PA.
First Bingo Game - early 1920's Hugh J. Ward first came up with the concept of bingo in Pittsburgh and began running the game at carnivals in the early 1920s, taking it nation-wide in 1924. He secured a copyright on the game & wrote a book of Bingo rules in 1933.
First U.S. Commercial Radio Station - KDKA - November 2, 1920 Dr. Frank Conrad, assistant chief engineer of Westinghouse Electric, first constructed a transmitter and installed it in a garage near his home in Wilkinsburg in 1916. The station was licensed as 8XK. At 6 p.m. on Nov.2, 1920, 8KX became KDKA Radio and began broadcasting at 100 watts from a makeshift shack atop one of the Westinghouse manufacturing buildings in East Pittsburgh.
The First Gas Station - December, 1913 In 1913 the first automobile service station, built by Gulf Refining Company, opened in Pittsburgh at Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street in East Liberty. It was designed by J.H. Giesey.
The First Baseball Stadium in the U.S. - 1909 In 1909 the first baseball stadium, Forbes Field, was built in Pittsburgh, followed soon by similar stadiums in Chicago, Cleveland,Boston, and New York. Forbes Field closed in 1970 when Three Rivers Stadium opened. PNC Park is the newest replacement which opened in the Spring of 2001.
First Motion Picture Theater - 1905 The first theater in the world devoted to the exhibition of motion pictures was the "Nickelodeon," opened by Harry Davis on Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh.
First Banana Split - 1904 The banana split was invented by Dr. David Strickler, a pharmacist, at Strickler's Drug Store in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
The First World Series - 1903 The Boston Pilgrims defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three in baseball's first modern World Series in 1903. The Pirates lost the final game 4-3, before a crowd of 7,455 in Boston. Four games of the series were played in Pittsburgh.
First Ferris Wheel - 1892/1893 The first Ferris Wheel, invented by Pittsburgh native and civil engineer, George Washington Gale Ferris (1859-1896) was in operation at the World's Fair (Columbian Exposition) in Chicago. It was over 264 feet high and was capable of carrying more than 2,000 passengers at a time.
Long-Distance Electricity - 1885 Westinghouse Electric developed alternating current, allowing long-distance transmission of electricity for the first time.
First Air Brake - 1869 The first practical air brake for railroads was invented by George Westinghouse in the 1860s and patented in 1869. In the same year he organized the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. With additional automatic features incorporated into its design, the air brake became widely accepted, and the Railroad Safety Appliance Act of 1893 made air brakes compulsory on all American trains.
Yinz non-Pittsburghers got nuttin' on us!!

I spent two weeks in Uganda on a mission trip from January 21 to February 3. It was just about the most exciting thing I've ever done in my 67 years. I am still reeling from the impact of the poverty I saw there. Of course I'd heard of the poverty common to Third World countries, but to see it firsthand was more than I was prepared for. The amazing thing is that the people seem to be so happy! They are some of the most gracious people I've ever met! Oh, and the children! They are absolutely beautiful! What thrilled me was to see the care that everyone takes concerning the children. They are loved and protected by all. The extended family environment also lends itself to a stable environment for the kids. The people there spend their whole day just surviving. From first thing in the morning to the last thing at night. Little children walk barefoot for miles with a five-gallon jerry can to get water to carry home and then boil it to make it potable. Women walk for miles with huge bundles of palm leaves or thatch on their head or back. Their houses have no glass or screens in the windows and only a curtain for a doorway. Malaria is rampant -- in fact, it's almost thought of like we think of the common cold -- everyone gets it and re-gets it. What a difference screens and mosquito nets would make! I could go on and on, Bill, but it's really a story better told face-to-face. We are so fortunate to live in the good old USA!!!
I look forward to seeing you in September - God willing and the creek don't rise.
Always, Dodo (The world's proudest grandma of the world's most perfect grandson)

After high school I went into the army. When I came out, there was no work. Someone said there was work in Chicago, so I hitchhiked along the Turnpike. Worked as a cook. Someone said the railroad was hiring. I got a job and worked many years as a conductor. Retired now. Vernon Neice came by and visited many, many years ago; I think he was a surveyor. No idea where he is now. -- Jim
Note from August 4:
Dear Bill and Phil,
I’m afraid that I’m not going to be able to attend the 50th year reunion of the class of 53. I honestly had all intentions of being there but unfortunately something has come up and Jane and I are not going to be able to be there. Please give my very best to all that are there that might remember me. I want to thank both of you for the time you took to send me all the info about our classmates. It’s something that I will always keep handy in my desktop and if you get any updated information please feel free to send it along. You guys are great. God bless you both.
